THE DESIGNER

Irem Kinay is born in Istanbul. Istanbul, the ancient city of Constantinople during the Byzantine rule and later the throne to the Ottoman Empire with many stories, created the perfect playground for the curious designer.

Irem Kinay, born in Istanbul, is the creative force behind Madame Malachite, an artisanal design studio she founded in 2017. Growing up in the historically rich city of Istanbul, formerly known as Constantinople, she was inspired by the stories and heritage of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, where jewels served as status symbols and protective amulets.

Having grown up in Southeast Asia, Irem developed a fascination with Eastern exotica. This blend of Eastern and Western influences informs her work, translating traditional elements into contemporary living styles.

Since 2010, Irem has curated objects for Assouline stores in Istanbul and styled libraries for private and commercial properties worldwide. She has collaborated with Assouline on 10 art books, including The Grand Bazaar, The Light of Istanbul, Ottoman Chic, and Golden Opulence, and authored Turquoise Coast.

Her passion for culture and style led to the creation of Madame Malachite’s first collection, "Cabinet of Curious Jewels," featuring handmade leather accessories adorned with natural stones. Irem’s designs start with stories of intrigue and adventure, fueled by her travels, filled with colors, and handcrafted with love.

Irem’s commitment to excellence and collaboration with skilled artisans has positioned Madame Malachite as a leader in high-end artisanal design, blending historical significance, cultural richness, and modern elegance into a symbol of luxury and refined craftsmanship.
